A headache can often be triggered by external stimuli, and you may be familiar with such triggers as chocolate and red wine. However, there are some triggers you may not realize are to blame for your headache. It is important to know what these are so you can avoid them if at all possible.

Lesser-Known Headache Triggers

  • Dehydration: If you are not drinking enough water, electrolytes may be lost, leading to a narrowing of the blood vessels. Whether one has headaches or not, drinking enough water daily is vital to overall health.

  • Cured or smoked meat: Packaged meats often contain nitrates and nitrites – chemicals that can cause a headache in some people. Try to avoid processed deli meat, smoked and cured meats, and jerkies.

  • Cheese: Some aged cheeses contain tyramine (also present in red wine) which causes the blood vessels to constrict, leading to a headache.

It would also be helpful to keep a headache journal that helps you to keep track of what you have eaten before a headache happens. This can help you to identify the possible trigger. Another important thing to think about is why the body is reacting to certain things being put into it. The central nervous system controls such things as digestion, chemical balance, and the contraction and dilation of blood vessels. If it is malfunctioning for some reason, headaches can be the end result.

This excess fluid, called endolymph, causes the signals being sent to the brain about where the body is located in its environment to become distorted. This is often the very thing that leads to Meniere’s disease symptoms.

  • Medication to stop dizziness

  • Water pills to combat fluid retention
