Agape Family Chiropractic Is Helping Tackle Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s disease is a condition of the inner ear having four hallmark symptoms:

  • Tinnitus – a ringing noise in the ears

  • Vertigo – a false sensation of movement (i.e. spinning)

  • A feeling of fullness in the affected ear

  • Hearing loss

Meniere’s disease can be unpredictable as it can sometimes hit a person out of nowhere and then not return for a long period of time. Others suffer from Meniere’s attacks frequently and for several days or even weeks at a time,  leading to anxiety in anticipation of the next attack. Meniere’s often hinders one from completing normal daily tasks.

What Causes Meniere’s Disease?

Meniere’s remains a bit of a mystery; however, researchers and doctors agree that it has to do with an excess buildup of fluid in the inner ear (referred to as the labyrinth). The labyrinth controls balance and hearing, with both being impacted when too much fluid is present. This excess fluid, called endolymph, causes the signals being sent to the brain about where the body is located in its environment to become distorted. This is often the very thing that leads to Meniere’s disease symptoms.

Caring for Meniere’s

Most family doctors will recommend prescription drugs that target specific symptoms. Often suggestions include:

  • Medication to stop dizziness

  • Water pills to combat fluid retention

  • Dietary changes (i.e. avoiding salt, caffeine, and alcohol)

  • An injection of antibiotics into the ear

  • Surgery if the above do not work

Why Choose an Upper Cervical Chiropractor?

Here at our Eureka, Missouri office, we have been able to help Meniere’s patients successfully by focusing on the proper function of the nervous system. Fluid often builds up when there is a misalignment in the top bone of the neck, the atlas bone. A misalignment here hinders proper signals from being sent to the brain via the brainstem. These can be factors in Meniere’s attacks.

By using a method that is gentle and drug-free, we have been able to help patients alleviate Meniere’s. Once the bones are back in proper alignment, the body can begin to perform at its optimum once again, giving people the relief they seek.
